The Research

According to the National Eating Disorder Association, “In the U.S, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males are fighting a life and death battle with an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia”(5) The most deadly of the two being anorexia. People with anorexia have an “intense fear of weight gain, they see themselves as overweight even though they are dangerously thin.”(Prah) In the November 30, 1995 edition of   Today’s science on file it states “as many as 10% of anorexics die because of their disease. They either starve to death or commit suicide.”(Prah) Bulimics are much harder to spot because “they usually weight within the normal weight for their height and age, they fear weight gain and feel intensely dissatisfied with their bodies”. People with bulimia have “binge eating episodes”, these episodes make them feel out of control so they resort to extreme weight control measures such as “self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise or fasting.” (Health)
