Growing up, Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was always my favorite movie. I’m a junk food fanatic anyways, so of course a movie about chocolate is going to strike my attention. When I found out Tim Burton was going to direct a re-make of it, I was stoked. Not just because I knew it would be wonderful, but it had, in my opinion, one of the greatest actors starring in it. Johnny Depp was playing the role of Willie Wonka. Most re-makes don’t do the original justice but, like Tim Burton himself, the movie was brilliant. It has the same concept of the old version, but he threw in his own creative visions. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton pair up perfectly in this movie, as well as others. (Edward Scissorhands-1990, Sleepy Hallow-1999, Corpse Bride-2005, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street-2007, and the upcoming Alice in Wonderland-2010) Tim Burton did change the movie around. In the older version, the “oompa loompas” were all different small people. In this one, he had them to all look identical. The scene with the squirrels and nuts replaced the geese and golden eggs. He also added some quirkiness, like riding in the limitless elevator. In this, you are introduced to the only female oompa loompa in the movie, Doris. One of my favorite moments in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was when Wille Wonka was having a flashback from childhood. He planned to leave home. His father told him he wouldn’t be there, shall young Willie return. It appeared as if Willie Wonka was traveling through countries, but through a museum of flags in reality. He ventures back home to find the complete townhouse ripped apart from its neighbors, leaving a gaping hole in between. |
