During a time alcohol was viewed as a psychologically or a behavioral problem. It is said to be composed of mental, physical, and spiritual components. Findings are now stating that alcoholism is called, “closet disease” or a “brain disease.” The NIAAA estimates fourteen million adults suffer from alcohol abuse or dependency. (Jsinski0001) This disease can be hereditary or passed on genetically by families. Alcoholism can be brought into remission, but if the disease is not treated it could result in death. Alcohol is widely available and remains relatively cheap. There is excessive consumption of alcohol everyday. Alcoholism is not just a problem for the young, but for older people. Public health researchers over the past four decades have come to recognize that most drinkers safely purchase alcohol from alcohol outlets; these places are also associated with serious alcohol problems in young people and adults. We need to ask why are we drinking so much and what it is about are world that drives a drink? Here are some examples of who in our society has an addiction to alcohol: the homemaker, executive, and retired executive, nurse. Addicts come in all sizes, ages, and all circumstances.
