Just a Plane Ride? The events on September 11th 2001 are some if not the most terrible events ever! According to Grant McCool the final death toll is now around 3000 people but still fluctuating. Not only did the attacks have a large impact on our mentality they also affected the way we travel. Not only the obvious air travel was affected but also traveling by car near important buildings and leaving and entering the country. Because of this 9/11 is one of the most influential days in American history. |

Air travel prior to 9/11 was second nature to most Americans. Speaking from personal experience it was quite hassle free. The only thing you really worried about was losing your luggage or maybe having a rough flight. It was very enjoyable to fly and there were few (compared with now) security measures in place. This changed immediately after September 11th 2001. Flying became a big ordeal, Garrick Blalock states that airlines instructed their passengers to arrive two hours early to ensure they would make their scheduled flight times. Which would make driving seem like a much more enjoyable alternative. Also due to the attacks many Americans became scared to fly. Which is exactly what the terrorists wanted to accomplish from the attacks. Americans not wanting to fly has a much larger impact on the economy than it may seem. |

Americans not wanting to fly caused the airports to cut back on their number of flights. With fewer flights there wasn't the need for as many mechanics, crew members, or flight attendants. This also caused the airlines to cut back on their pay for the pilots and all other essential employees. With more people being out of jobs or on reduced salary they had to cut back on their spending which also hurt other companies. Also with the reduced number of flights the prices to fly have gone up tremendously to help the airlines keep a profit. |

Long lines was the best way to describe airports after 9/11. It would take two maybe three hours if you were lucky to get to your flight. This was caused by the new and very intense security measures put in place by the TSA (transportation security administration). The TSA was formed after 9/11 to help prevent another catastrophe. They put into affect new security measures to try to combat the new security threats such as liquid explosives. With terrorists becoming ever more ingenious in their the ways it is becoming increasingly tougher for the TSA to keep up. |
