Diabesity: An Overwhelming Epidemic

Diabetes and Obesity are two major issues that plague out world today. Being seen as related in some way to each other, the two have been combined into one powerful word; DIABESITY. Over 20 million Americans live with Diabetes. But together, these two traits are becoming an overwhelming world epidemic.

The term diabesity was coined back in 1980 but popularized in 2005, and refers to the relationship between type II diabetes and obesity. Web.  29 Jan. 2010. ] Of the people inflicted with Diabetes, 80 to 90 percent of them are obese, says www.diabeticcareservices.com. Diabetes is not the only illnesses that obesity can lead to. Diabetes also puts its victims at risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and increased chance of cardiovascular disease. According to Oxford Dictionary of Sports Science & Medicine, obesity is defined as “the storage of excessive amounts of fat.”  The International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) stated that, Diabetes and Obesity are the biggest public health challenges of the 21st century. Both illnesses can be associated with race, age, and family background.

. What exactly is Diabetes?  Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, it’s classified as “a disorder in which the levels of glucose are persistently above normal range.”
