Life as a single mom

One of the biggest worries for single mothers is the financial struggles, especially if the father is not fulfilling his financial responsibilities. In the single mom interview she was asked how it was/is financially being a single mom. Her response was that it was very hard but she had to plan very carefully. She didn’t put anything on credit because there was always the fear if she lost her job that there was no one else that could make her payments for her. She knew she was on her own and that everything depended on her. So she saved. When she needed to buy a vehicle she had to save up and pay cash. She also knew that she had to stay very organized so that their days would run as smooth as possible because any added stress would not be good for either of them. She also tried to make sure they stayed very healthy because if her son was to get sick she was the only one that could take him to the doctor or to stay home with her son and that would result in loss of pay, which she could not afford. She also knew she had to keep her job so she didn’t want to call in unless she absolutely had too.

Since there are so many children growing up in single parent homes there has been a lot of research done that says that it is very hard for single moms to further their education. The single mom that was interviewed agreed. She told me that unless one has family that is willing to help you watch your kids in the evening so you can go back to school it is almost impossible to do so. The reason she didn’t finish college is because she believed it was not fair for her child to be in daycare all day while she was at work and then to have to spend his evening at a daycare. She has taken some college classes here and there but has never been able to finish her degree. Not having a degree to fall back on made things very difficult when looking for jobs. She also knew when she had one she had to hang on to it because without a degree they were very hard to come by, especially one that would pay enough to provide for a family’s needs.
